Protect Your Personal Banking Data from Misuse

Protect Your Personal Banking Data from Misuse

In today's digital era, protecting personal data is essential because it can be misused by irresponsible individuals, such as fraudsters and hackers.

Furthermore, personal data is often used in various online activities, such as registering for applications, making mobile banking transactions, e-commerce transactions, paying loans through applications, and much more.

Examples of personal data include:

  • Identity data, such as full name, identity number (such as KTP or passport), address, place of birth, date of birth, and mother's name.
  • Financial data, such as bank account numbers, credit card numbers, or financial transaction details.
  • Biometric data, or data derived from human biological measurements, such as fingerprints, iris scans, or facial recognition.

How to Protect Personal Data

Here are some tips to protect your personal data from falling into the wrong hands.

  1. Create a Strong Password
When creating a password, avoid using words or numbers that are easily guessed by others, such as birthdays. Choose a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols, and change it regularly. It's better to create a unique password than to use the same one across multiple sites.
  2. Don't Overshare Personal Information on Social Media
This can put your personal data at risk. Be wise when using social media and be more careful if you want to post your location, hometown, birthday, or other personal details. Check your privacy settings to see who can see your posts.
  3. Be Careful When Using Free Wi-Fi
Most free public Wi-Fi networks have very few security measures, making it easy for anyone using the same network to access other people's activity.
It's best to wait until you're at home or use a secure network, especially if you want to use banking and credit card services.
  4. Don't Open Random Links and Attachments
Hackers are very cunning and often create phishing scams using links or attachments to make them appear as if they're communicating with a bank, utility company, or other corporate entity.
If you receive a suspicious link or attachment, don't click on it immediately and check the source.
  5. Check the Security of the Site You Visit
Before entering your personal data on a website, check the address bar. If there's a padlock symbol and the URL starts with "https," the site is secure.
In addition, there are several other ways to determine whether a site is trustworthy, such as the website's privacy policy, contact information, or a "verified secure" seal.
  6. Don't Download Apps Carelessly
Apps downloaded from untrusted sources may contain malware that can steal personal data.
Be sure to download apps only from official sources like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and check the permissions the app requests before downloading.
  7. Update Your Software Regularly
This is another way to protect your personal data because software updates usually include security fixes that protect against new threats.
Don't ignore notifications to update your software, whether on your computer, smartphone, or the apps you use, including antivirus, anti-spyware, and firewall applications.
